FRUGAL SHOPPING TIPS

While the economic situation is such they we need to consider how we spend, we should start the practice of being savvy frugal shoppers. Being a budget conscious shopper should be a priority in life – getting the most for your hard earned dollars. Why spend the money you worked 8 hours for in a matter of seconds and on things that you use once! So here are some ways that you can get value for your dollar:

Warehouse sales

A friend of mine recently spent $34 dollars on clothing. It was a great deal since each item cost $2.00. Yes that’s right and they were brand name clothing which would have sold in the stores for up to $200. How did she do it? Well my frugal savvy friend went to a warehouse sale! Many brands have warehouse sales during the year. You can get some of the best deals here as my friend did. You just need to be aware of this and look at signs posted near the business locations, classified ads or even if you know someone working there just ask them when the business will be having the next warehouse sale. You can definitely save a bundle of money and look good at the same time.

Op-shops

I was recently introduced to the great buys you can get at op-shops by a friend who was going to a costume party. I always eschewed these organizations as having goods of low quality –ugly things that people just didn’t want. I was in for a surprise since I saw some designer label items there, as well as beautiful vases and tableware. Now I must admit that I did see some rather ugly stuff! However I did pick up a beautiful china vase for my bamboo plants at $3.75. I grabbed the item and paid for it immediately before they decide to increase the price (As if!). A great bargain as far as I was concerned! So scout out those neighbourhood op-shops and see what great finds you can use – the key word being use.

Recycle

My sister recently said that a person only needs 3 basic things in their closet – the ever present black dress, a pair of jeans and a suit. You can do so much with these items! Some people feel that they need to get the latest styles and keep up with fashion. Yes you can do that without buying the latest and supposedly the outfit that will make you desirable and sexy. So how can you do that? Well look at what you have in your closet and consider how you can creatively mix and match. You can wear the vest over a long sleeve V-neck T-shirt with the jeans or the skirt/pants of the suit. Or that lacy top, or even just the vest! The point here is to be creative, comfortable and natural.

If you have to shop

Make room in the closet. Clear out all the things you have not worn in a year. Believe me if it’s that long since you last wore it, you’re never going to wear it again. So take it out and give it to the op-shop, someone else might find it fashionable. Now that the closet has space you want to take inventory on what you have and what you need. So with a list of items you need to get you can embark on your shopping trip. However to be a budget savvy shopper, you leave all your credit and ATM cards at home as well as your check book. Leave your friends and family also because they can be major distractions, causing you to spend more that you anticipated. Armed with a specific amount of cash in your wallet for shopping you venture into the stores to begin to find the things on that list. Choose outfits that can be worn in many different combinations and choose quality. It is important to look for the sales, or find out when the sales are on so that you can shop at these times. It will be well worth your time and money.

I hope that I have given you food for thought in being a frugal savvy shopper. These are not new concepts however we need to be reminded of them especially in the economic climate in which we find ourselves.
Have fun
