USING LEFTOVERS

My grandmother always said waste not want not! I know what she meant because there were times when even the most basic thing like food was scarce and one tends to get sick of crackers and cheese after a while.

So in order to ensure minimal waste of food the key step is making a meal plan. Plan your daily or weekly meals. This is always a great idea if you are working and have kids. Since you don’t have time to waste your plan will help you get the meal done in the shortest amount of time.

Even though you have planned the meal and know that there should be none left over the unexpected always happens. Freeze and make use of the leftovers. This can also help reducing meal preparation during the week and is a great way to save on food by making it last.

Do you have some leftover veggies and a small amount of beef and/or chicken and you’re not sure what you can do with it? No matter what it is you can make an extremely tasty and creative meal. Don’t have a recipe or not sure what to do? Well you can find a recipe for anything you can imagine these days by searching the internet. And some of these recipes are aimed at those being financially conscious.

One of the things that get me annoyed is the wasted food – especially fruit. If the fruit is bruised or has gotten a bit soft you can still use it. There are great recipes for using stale fruit. One great idea is to make fruit parfait as snacks for the kids. You can also make jams, pies, cakes or puddings.

So follow the adage our parents heard and used and please do not waste.
